– T. Greer, via Matt Frost. If energy costs for long distance transport continue to rise and no substitutes for petroleum can be found, it’s likely to strengthen the importance of local communities and economies. Whether that’s a disaster, in the sense discussed here, is another matter.

I’m not particularly well-traveled, and thanks to highway gridlock, dysfunctional airlines, and (especially) rising energy costs, the window for becoming well-traveled, as we understand it today, may be closing for most of us. The Internet, of course, makes a return to provincialism impossible, but it’s hardly a perfect substitute.
